Jazz Pictures is the series of works dedicated to jazz, created by the artist from 2011 onward. In its technique, the series are Michael’s signature drawings in which fine lines created in Indian ink are combined with special mixture of oil pastels providing unique combination of rich colours and unexpected volume. Michael works in this technique exclusively on an unique hand-made Italian cotton paper with a distinct structure adding to volume and special depth effect.
The artist portrays jazz in both techniques he works, oil paintings and original drawings in mixed technique. Although both directions depict the artist’s reflections on jazz as both musical and personal psychological phenomenon (as for musicians, as for their listeners), the two art genres shows Michael’s reflections on jazz quite differently.
If his oil paintings on jazz are emphasising the jazz dimension’s outreach, its depth and multi-layers of emotions, his fine and dynamic original drawings on jazz shows intricate detail, inter-connections, fine and very fine feelings and emotions.
Those works from which one can almost listen one’s favourite jazz tunes, show jazz and its own special micro-cosmos from unexpected angles and by loving eye of the artist.
Many of these works are in notable private collections in many countries, some of them with strong jazz tradition, such as the USA, Lithuania, Italy, Israel, Russia, as well as the UK, Finland and Austria.
This collection of Michael’s works is growing all the time and it will become the part of the international tour of Take Eight. Tribute to Jazz exhibition curated by Inna Rogatchi.
